With extremely high tension HDPE cables the copper or aluminium conductors are, for example, wound together with a shield consisting of helically arranged copper wires.
The cavities which arise in this screened area are filled with swellable powder.
In case of contact with water, e.g. as a result of damage to the cable cover, these layers swell up considerably and thus prevent the axial penetration of the water in the damaged cable.
